Healthy weight mainteance tips

Today’s blog is about simple, healthy ways to lose weight and maintain a weight that is right for you.

Eat sensible meals.  A sensible meal is low in fat and sugar, includes plenty of raw vegetables and fiber, and has a moderate amount of carbohydrates and protein. Including a combination of the following foods and suggested serving sizes may greatly enhance your weight-loss /maintenance efforts.

4-6 ounces of lean meat (chicken, turkey, white meat fish – including tuna in water) or 1 cup beans, soy protein, tofu or cottage cheese
1-2 Tbsp. raw fat (avocado, raw nuts and seeds)
1-2 servings of whole grains (serving=1 slice bread, 1 roll, 1/3 cup rice or 1/2 cup pasta)
2-4 servings of vegetables (1c. raw {preferably} or 1/2 c. cooked)

Avoid carbonated beverages.  Carbonated beverages are typically high in sugar and their consumption is linked to increased obesity and diabetes rates in the Unites States. Even if the beverage contains no sugar, the carbonation destroys enzymes and the friendly intestinal bacteria required for healthy digestion and immunity.

Drinking six to eight 12-ounce glasses of water daily promotes healthy functioning of all the body’s systems and encourages further weight loss. Juices and other sweetened beverages add significant amounts of calories and sugar to your diet. If you do drink juice, make sure to count it toward one of your daily snacks.

Try not to eat within 2-3 hours of going to bed.  Your metabolism drops significantly at night, causing the body to store calories as fat rather than use them as energy. Also, many people tend to do the most snacking while relaxing in front of the T.V. Breaking this habit will be a positive lifestyle change long after you have achieved your weight-loss goals.

Doing any type of aerobic activity (walking, cycling, running, swimming, aerobic dance, stair climbing, in-line skating, etc.) for 30-40 minutes four times a week is ideal and will greatly enhance your weight-loss efforts. You may also want to add strength training to your routine three times a week to help you replace fat with muscle and further enhance your metabolism. If you are not used to exercising, begin slowly with a 20-minute walk to build up your endurance. As the pounds come off, you will find exercising easier to do.

Eating Healthy – fruits & veggie tips
July 29, 2008, 8:04 pm

I am always thinking of ways to eat healthier and depending on which magazine or book you read, you hear a lot of different things.  One thing that I read recently confirmed my belief in phytochemicals.  I learned that bigger produce isn’t better.  When it comes to fruits and vegetables, as they grow, they lose their nutrients and antioxidant levels.  So – when shopping for produce – choose the smallest and brightest of the bunch!  Bright colors are signs of phytochemicals according to Donald Davis, Ph.D.  So – along with my Heartland Select drink (www.infinity2.com/faithavery), I will choose the smalller, brighter fruits & veggies!
Organic fruits & veggies are another good choice.  On average they have 30% higher levels of antioxidants than non-organics, but can contain similar levels of vitamins.

Mold after the flood

After the Flood: Mold

The record-breaking floods across the Midwest have affected the lives and livelihoods of countless people. Besides the obvious damage, flooded homes pose other serious health risks. When buildings are flooded, it is next to impossible to dry them out fast enough before mold starts to grow. Bacterial contamination is a side effect of floods as well. With mold and bacteria come sickness, allergies, and other respiratory ailments.

Mold from floods can trigger allergies & asthma problems!  Call Faith for help 616-662-2370

Post-flood risks: toxic basements.  My sister just experienced this as did several friends and acquaintances.  I was able to help them kill the black mold as well as other contaminants! Email me for info: faith@livinghealthiernow.org

I decided to write about the balancing act that we, as Mompreneurs must go through. The challenges are many; the rewards are plentiful too. We have to be expert time-managers, balance all the kids’ different schedules, plan and prepare meals, handle household budgets and bill paying as well as many household chores, spend quality time with our husband, try to find time to socialize with friends and family, and run our businesses! PHEW! I’m tired just reading all of this and yet, it’s a daily routine. I have found that My Daily Director has been a huge help in managing my time and balancing my life. I am far from perfect, but find that when I use My Daily Director, I have a much more productive day! Check it out at www.mydailydirector.com. Live Life by YOUR Design!

Another useful tool that a friend recently told me about is http://www.flylady.net I have to get into this more as it looks very interesting & my friend said it has been really helpful for her!

Help for food allergy sufferers

I was just reading about somebody who helps others learn how to shop and cook for people with food allergies.  I struggled with this when my daughter was diagnosed with food allergies (wheat, milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, cocoa, etc.).  I wish I had known more about blogging and checking other’s sites to learn some hints and tips.  Check out http://livingwithwellness.wordpress.com/2008/07/15/fun-with-substitutes

I found help for my IBS & my daughter’s food allergies through nutritional supplementation. Check out www.infinity2.com/faithavery.  The supplements that help my daughter the most are Essentials for Life and Digest-A-Meal.

Mold problems!

In West Michigan, where I live, I have heard repeated stories lately of people who have had their basements flood because of all the rain we’ve been having!  This is presenting big problems with mold and mildew.  Often we don’t even see the mold that is there, hidden under wet carpeting, etc.  It’s scary because some molds are extremely dangerous to our health!  I just helped my sister & another friend with their flooded basements and have more to help yet this week.  It’s critical that the mold be deactivated right away.  If you have a similar problem, call me and I’ll tell you what you need to do to handle this problem.  It’s so important to our health and that of our family to “nip the problem in the bud”…so get that mold deactivated ASAP before it affects your health in a negative way!
